CEBU CITY, Philippines — Only 15 percent of the employees of the Cebu City Hall are not yet vaccinated, which means that City Hall workers are getting close to getting their Christmas bonuses.

Among the 9,999 employees of the City Hall, at least 85 percent or 8,499 have been vaccinated already with only 15 percent or 1,499 having been not vaccinated yet.

Most of these individuals are job-order (JO) employees, whose work is contract-based and does not have an employer-employee relationship with the city government.

In fact, while casual and regular employees will be getting P20,000 as a bonus for Christmas, they will only be receiving P3,000 and a sack of rice.

Still, the requirement for the bonus regardless of the amount is the same, which is that they must be vaccinated.

Mayor Michael Rama warned the employees, casual, regular, or JO that those who would refuse to be vaccinated would suffer the consequences for their decision.

“Kadaghanan aning unvaccinated, mga JOs. Nya ang mga JOs kung dili sila magpavaccinate, unsa may mahitabo? Dili lang kay walay bonus, di ba naay January? They better think about it,” said the mayor.

(Most of those unvaccinated employees are JOs. And then the JOs if they will not get vaccinated, what will happen to them? They cannot only receive their bonus, but there is January right? They better think about it.)

Rama has ordered the evaluation of employees until January 2022 to serve as a performance evaluation on whether they should remain employees of the City Hall. The most affected are the JOs and casual employees whose contracts are up by the end of the year.

This means that the city government may or may not renew their contracts if they will be vaccinated, although Rama has refused to categorically say if this is the plan.

He insinuated that he would be making an announcement soon regarding the bonuses since many of the vaccinated employees had been worried that they would not get their bonuses if even a single employee would not get vaccinated.

“Ako lang usa ipostpone akong announcement. Ang most important thing, as soon as the bonus will already be approved, I would like to have a very serious meeting on how the bonus will be distributed with my statement being taken seriously,” said the mayor.

(I would just postpone my announcement for now. The most important thing as soon as the bonus will already be approved, I would like to have a very serious meeting on how the bonus will be distributed with my statement being taken seriously.)

For now, the deadline would be December 31, 2021, for all employees to get vaccinated, or else they may not be able to report to work, so the mayor encouraged all employees to get vaccinated immediately not only for the sake of the bonus but for their jobs as well.
