Lapu-Lapu City Jail in barangay Mactan was packed with visitors as they held their fiesta celebration last Monday in honor of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart.

This year, inmates and jail guards held a Sinulog-themed dance competition.

For the first time since 2001, they have organized a bigger presentation ever done inside a jail facility, this time a Sinulog dance contest with performers donning elegant costumes, props and accompanied by a drum and bugle corps.

The Infirmary Cell took first place. The 2nd place went to San Lucas building, 3rd place by the Female Dormitory, 4th place to the Solid Building and 5th place to Trigger Building.

Jail warden Supt. Renante Rubio said the winning groups received cash prizes, but refused to disclose the amount.

Mayor Paz Radaza was impressed by the inmates’ talent who according to her has no difference with the performers outside the jail.

“I expect all of you inmates to aim for good conduct as we have supported you the best we can.” said Radaza who was the guest of honor.

Congestion

Rubio announced that the Lapu-Lapu City government will be funding the construction of a two-story building to address the congestion in the jail facility.

According to an earlier report, the 160-capacity Lapu-Lapu City Jail has 1,262 inmates.
He also announces that a new program of the judiciary to decongest jails will soon benefit the inmates

starting this month when jail service would be shortened based on inmates’ good conduct.

Senior Insp. Jonnabele Roiles, jail wardress, danced with the female inmates as the Festival Queen.

Last Monday’s rains did not stop their performances at a basketball court inside the jail facility.

Volunteer missionaries served as judges.

It was also family day, so inmates did not just have fun among themselves but with their loved ones.

The day was also made a family day as families and relatives of the inmates were invited inside and enjoy and experience the fun of a fiesta together inside the jail compound.

The festivities started with a Holy Mass celebrated by Rev. Fr. Bartolome Sagadal in the morning. There were also parlor games, videoke singing and computer games for visiting kids.
