Architects paint murals on walls of Subangdaku
Local architects yesterday painted with images of rural life the defaced wall of a factory in barangay Subangdaku, Mandaue City.
Hong Tin Soy Factory, whose wall used to be filled with vandals, became a street canvass for the United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) – Datu Lapu-Lapu Chapter as the group chose the wall for mural painting.
Their project complements the current mural paintings of dolphins and other environmental themes in other structues at the barangay, such as the Subangdaku flyover, Subangdaku Barangay Captain Ernie Manatad said.
Manatad requested the architects’ lay-out artist, Joseph Judilla, to depict countryside living to show Subangdaku’s past.
“People need to be reminded of who we were,” Manatad told reporters.
UAP-Datu Lapu2 Chapter President Richard Abella said that they were inspired by the works of “dolphin guy” AG Sano who did the mural at the flyover.
“As an architect, it’s part of our work to protect the environment and this is our way,” Abella said.
The architects’ family also helped in the undertaking by sponsoring the paints and brushes.
“Aside from helping, the activity became a bonding time for the family,” he added.
The project is part of the barangay’s continuing effort for public awareness on protecting the environment.
Mural paintings in the city of Mandaue started when AG Sano committed to paint the flyover with dolphins as his theme. Sano’s advocacy is to protect the extinct marine species – converting the barangay as the mural capital of the city and probably the whole Cebu.
The architects’ group also plans to have a “Pope Painting” which will be dedicated in time for the Pope’s visit to the Philippines in January.
