Fernandez honored with commemorative stamp
CEBU CITY, Philippines — The Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost) honored Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) commissioner and Philippine basketball legend Ramon “El Presidente” Fernandez with a commemorative stamp in celebration of its 75th anniversary.
In a letter sent to Fernandez on February 7, PHLPost Postmaster general and CEO Norman Fulgencio stated that they were honoring the former on their “Outstanding Filipino” commemorative stamp series, mainly because of his great contribution and influence in the Philippine sports scene.
The two other commemorative stamp series are billed as the ‘Forever Remembered Series,’ and ‘World-Renowned Series’, which are both to be launched soon.
Fernandez is the second Filipino basketball player to receive such an honor.
Robert Jaworski, one of Ferandez’s former teammate and rival during their glory days in PBA, was the first basketball player being honored by PHLPost last year.
There’s no other basketball player in the Philippines more deserving to receive such an honor than Fernandez, a multiple-record holder of the PBA.
Fernandez is a 19-time PBA champion, four-time PBA MVP, and 13-time PBA Mythical First Team. He is also the all-time leader in scoring, rebounding, blocks, career free throws made, and career minutes.
Currently, Fernandez is an active PSC commissioner for the Visayas, initiating numerous grassroots development training programs.
He was recently appointed by the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) as the chef de mission for the Philippine delegation in the 31st Southeast Asian Games in May in Hanoi, Vietnam.
PHLPost also stated in the letter that they would honor nine other personalities. They will have the formal launching and stamp presentation on February 26 at the Manila Central Post Office.
