Five community dailies—Cebu Daily News, Sun.Star Daily, The Freeman , Sun.Star Superbalita and Banat News—were joined by delegations of the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster sa Pilipinas (KBP) and GMA-7 in the parade.

Hundreds of Cebu-based journalists and media workers converged yesterday at the Fuente Osmeña Circle for the annual parade and general assembly to kick off this week’s 20th Cebu Press Freedom Week celebration.

The parade which ended at the University of San Carlos—South Campus Rudolf Rahmann Cultural Center coincided with the 42nd anniversary of the declaration of Martial Law in the country by the late president Ferdinand Marcos.

Five community dailies—Cebu Daily News, Sun.Star Daily, The Freeman , Sun.Star Superbalita and Banat News—were joined by delegations of the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster sa Pilipinas (KBP) and GMA-7 in the parade.

In his homily, “singing priest” Fr. Jonas Mejares, OSA, reminded the media about their watchdog role in the community and to forge love despite competition.

“In equality, envy is the most common. You who are working in the media, be what you ought to be. Work not only for reward but work for the greater glory of God,” he said.

Support

He also said the church needs the media in helping spread the word of God and show care and support.

“The Church needs you. We need you to spread the good news about God’s kingdom,” Fr. Mejares said.
“Perform your work and responsibilities with cheerfulness and diligence for the Lord’s sake. Work for the greater glory of God. Let us join our hands together to make this world a better place to live in,” he added.

After the communion Fr. Mejares, a renowned composer and singer, drew cheers when he sang a combination of Michael Jackson’s Heal the World; Bob Thiele and George David Weiss’ What a Wonderful World; and I Believe.

The group dance presentation and raffle prizes followed suit with the KBP contingent dethroning six-time winner Sun.Star to bag the P20,000 top prize after nearly five years of absence in the competition.

The KBP group performed a medley of dance hits from the 70s to the 90s while Sun.Star performed a Cebuano dance song.

Cebu Daily News did a Korean pop (K-Pop) number while the Freeman danced a medley of hip-hop and dance tunes.

KBP led by its chairman Jun Tagalog of dyLA and dyHP station manager Ruphil Banoc received the P20,000 cash prize while Sun.Star received the P15,000.

The Freeman garnered third prize while Cebu Daily News finished fourth. Sun.Star was also awarded the Best in Parade while The Freeman won the Early Birds award for most number of participants that arrived first at the Fuente Osmeña circle assembly area.

Later, the Cebu Federation of Beat Journalists (CFBJ) elected unopposed Sun.Star senior reporter Elias Baquero as its president for the ninth straight year in elections held at the Cebu Parklane Hotel. /With Correspondent Norman V. Mendoza
