The Department of Health has extended P1.2 million to the City Veterinary Office of Lapu-Lapu City to fund its plan to euthanize stray dogs being kept in the city pound and other services.

The amount will also be used to buy dog food for the facility’s animal wards, chemicals, and anti-rabies vaccines.

Dr. Janice Togunon, the city veterinarian, said they need to adopt extreme measures as the city pound is already filled to capacity since the first quarter.

“We requested for funds from the Department of Health (DOH) and finally the budget was approved,” she said.

Togunon said they continue to campaign for the adoption of stray dogs in their custody.

The office set a target of registering and vaccinating 11,000 dogs before the year ends.

Togunon said they are aiming to make Lapu-Lapu city rabies-free by 2016. A CVO team recently went to Montserrat Subdivision in barangay Pajac and conducted free vaccination, deworming and distribution of vitamins to pet owners.
