Petron faces Foton

By: Jonas N. Panerio November 09,2014 - 02:07 PM

The unbeaten Petron Blaze Spikers try for a clean sweep of the first round when they tangle with Foton today in the 2014 Philippine Superliga Grand Prix at the Cuneta Astrodome.

Game time is set at 6 p.m. following the highly anticipated match between Generika and Mane ‘N Tail at 4 p.m. in the women’s division. Unbeaten Cignal, meanwhile, tests the strength of Cavite at 8 p.m. in the men’s side of this competition.

Billed as the team to beat for having a well-balanced roster and a pair of quality imports, the Blaze Spikers took the tournament by storm as they won their first four matches in convincing fashion, sending a strong message that they are ready to claim the crown set to be vacated by three-time champion Philippine Army.

In their recent victory, the Blaze Spikers survived a flat start to clobber RC Cola-Air Force,  28-30, 25-23, 25-16, 25-19, with former Miss Oregon Alaina Bergsma leading the way with 26 points and top rookie Dindin Santiago finishing with 17 markers.

With that, Petron sits comfortably on top of the team standings with a 4-0 slate while Cignal (3-1) and RC Cola-Air Force (3-2) are in second and third places, respectively, entering the last playing day of the first round.

Also equally interesting is the curtain-raiser between Generika and Mane ‘N Tail. With the league’s most prolific import in Kristy Jaeckel displaying a career performance, the Lady Stallions are tipped to provide slam-bang action against the Life Savers, who are bannered by the nucleus of multi-titled De La Salle Lady Spikers.

Against the Raiders, Jaeckel erupted for 38 points, nearly matching her 40-point effort which is deemed as the most productive performance ever in local volleyball circuit.
