P19.7M San Fernando road repair starts
After several years of waiting, work will finally begin on a dilapidated provincial road in San Fernando town, southern Cebu.
A 2.8-kilometer portion of the Sangi-Bugho road in barangay Magsico will be concreted, putting an end to the residents’ complaints on excessive road dust and dangerous potholes.
The project was inaugurated yesterday.
Village Chief Johnny Aresgado said the 13-kilometer road, with all its deep craters, had long been a problem of the barangay.
“During Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia’s time, this concern was already raised. Plans were already underway but we don’t know why it did not push through,” Aresgado said in Cebuano.
Small cars need to drive around the potholes to avoid getting stuck. Several plants and trees have turned brownish gray due to the accumulation of road dust.
Many residents have also complained about the aggravation of some who have asthma.
Aresgado said even when he was still barangay councilman in 2008, he was among those who followed up with the provincial government regarding the problem.
He said he was persistent in reminding the Capitol of its responsibility until the beginning of the current administration.
The project, which costs P19.7 million, was contracted to TCI-Tuanson Construction, and is expected to be completed in 120 days.
Taiheiyo Cement Philippines Inc., a cement firm based in San Fernando, donated 42,500 sacks of cement for the project.
Present during the inauguration yesterday were Gov. Hilario Davide III, Vice Gov. Agnes Magpale, Acting San Fernando Mayor Mico Canoy, Ricardo Tuanson of TCI-Tuanson Construction, and TCPI representatives.
Many residents of barangay Magsico have long been dreaming of the road to be fixed.
For 45-year old Felipe Obaob, a former factory worker, he is very happy that repair on the Sangi-Bugho road will finally be done in the next three months.
“Soon, there will be no more dust and no more potholes. Many have tripped and injured along the craters. Hopefully, when the road is fixed, that won’t happen anymore,” he said.
The Provincial Engineering Office is also planning to extend the concreting by another six kilometers next year.
