LAPU-LAPU CITY, Philippines — Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Junard “Ahong” Chan describes the death of Councilor Nelson Yap as a great loss in the city council and his administration.

Yap died due to a heart attack on Jan. 1 at the age of 68.

Chan describes Yap as an epitome of a sincere and truthful public servant.

He said that even though Yap was already suffering from an illness, he still chose to attend their sessions to show to Oponganons his passion for giving service to the public and for the development of the city.

“Ang pagkawala ni honorable Nelson Yap dako kaayo nang kawad-on sa konseho diin atong nakita sa iyang panerbisyo nga usa siya kamatinud-anon, unsa siya ka sinsero sa iyang pagpangalagad isip konsehal sa atong siyudad sa Lapu-Lapu,” Chan said.

(The loss of honorable Nelson Yap is a big loss for the City Council where one can see his true passion for service, how he is sincere in serving as one of the councilors of our city of Lapu-Lapu.)

Chan also expressed his gratitude to the councilor for supporting his programs and projects, one of which was the approval of the skyway project.

The mayor said that Yap really stood on his side in pursuing the project, for this would bring economic development, not only to the city but to the entire Province of Cebu.

“He is fighting to solve the problem in the city, it can enjoy the economic benefits of Cebu, and it’s an income generating (project) with no cost for the city,” he added.

On Saturday, Jan. 7, 2023, the remains of Yap were laid to rest at the Mactan Memorial Garden.

Yap was a city councilor for six terms starting from 1998-2001, 2001-2004, 2004-2007, 2016-2019, and 2019-2022 and was reelected in the 2022 elections under the Team Ahong-Team Libre party.
