MANILA, Philippines — The Land Transportation Office (LTO) and several driving schools on Thursday agreed to push through with the imposition of a price cap on courses for driver’s license applicants starting April 15, 2023.

The LTO said it met with members of the Association of Accredited Driving Schools of the Philippines, Inc., the Philippine Association of LTO-accredited Driving Schools, and other driving school companies in the country to hear their recommendations and address their concerns.

“Sa nasabing pulong, ipinahayag ng mga dumalong driving school ang suporta sa layunin ng LTO na maging makatwiran at balanse ang singilin ng mga driving school kasabay ng pagtitiyak na makasusunod sa mga bagong panuntunan ng ahensya sa ilalim ng Memorandum Circular No. JMT 2023-2390,” the agency said in a statement.

(In the said meeting, the driving schools expressed their support to the mission of LTO in making driving school fees reasonable and balanced while ensuring adherence with the new regulations of the agency under the Memorandum Circular No. JMT 2023-2390.)

The memorandum, according to the LTO, sets the maximum prescribed rate for a theoretical and practical driving course for motorcycles at P3,500 and P5,000 for light vehicles.

It was in March when LTO first announced its move to make more affordable the fees charged by driving schools for such courses “in response to the appeal of many of our countrymen who are crying over high charges.”— Aliah Gumasing, INQUIRER.net trainee
