Speeding blamed for spike in South Coastal accidents

THE South Coastal Road will be closed if motorists passing through the area continue to exceed the 40-kph speed limit.

“If we won’t enforce that tomorrow, we will close the SCR,” Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama told media in a press conference at the Rizal Memorial Public Library yesterday afternoon.

He said there have been many accidents in the area because of motorists exceeding the 40 kph speed limit.

Rama showed data from the Cebu City Traffic Operations Management (Citom) which showed that 280 vehicular accidents occurred in 2013, up from 272 in 2012.

“This is a threat. So it has to be stopped”, Rama said. Among the accident-prone areas are Talisay-Cebu City boundary, El Pardo junction, Sugbo building intersection and Mambaling junction and Ludo bridge.
