Children’s park in Mandaue accommodates indigents
MORE indigent children continue to enjoy free use of Happy Mong Kids Park in barangay Alang-alang, Mandaue City.
Last Monday, 100 street children from Mandaue City and 20 others from Cordova Day Care Center were treated to a whole day of fun-filled activities at the park.
The amusement theme park accommodates children certified as indigents by their local social welfare department.
The park’s facilities consist of 11 stations with slides, bumper cars and boat rides, among others.
The children from Mandaue, including a group of folk dancers, were accompanied by Maricel Yu, focal person of Mandaue City Council for the Protection of Children (MCCPC), while those from Cordova were chaperoned by Vice Mayor
Theresa Sitoy-Cho and her husband Charlie Cho, president of the Cebu Korean Association.
The Mandaue street children rendered a folk dance number during a short program witnessed by park executives led by vice president Mario Cabahug.
“We were supposed to be here last December but due to a sudden change of schedule brought about by typhoon Ruby, we rescheduled it to this January,” Yu said.
“We are very grateful for the accommodation the Happy Mong Kids Park has extended to the indigent children. We hope they continue to please the children,” Sitoy-Cho said.
Two Danish student volunteers — Belinda Zachariazen, 26, and Louise Rasmussen, 20 — assisted the children as part of their college’s program to render community service in foreign countries for five months.
Last Dec. 15, the Quota International led by president Nieves Maria Fuentes also brought 149 children from the San Jose and Guba Day Care Center in Talamban, Cebu City with permission from Cebu City Department of Social Welfare and
Services chief Ester Concha and Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama.
In November last year, 150 indigent children from barangay Basak, Lapu-Lapu City were also brought to the park through the efforts of Bureau of Customs (BOC) Cebu District Collector Roberto Almadin, BOC Mactan Port Collector Gerardo Campo, Mayor Paz Radaza, Basak barangay captain Isabelito Darnayla and park vice president Mar Florante Cabahug.
