One of Cebu’s most grueling triathlons, the 80/80 Series will host its first leg on May 2 in the town of Sogod northern Cebu.
Since its inception last year, the 80/80 Series has evolved into a mainstream race participated in by Cebuano and out-of-town triathlon junkies.
This might be the first time that the municipality of Sogod will host the race but the town is already familiar with the sport since its mayor, Moonyeen Durano has been holding an annual triathlon as part of the town’s fiesta celebration.
“Just like our previous 80/80 races, there’s going to be a full road closure,” said organizer Steve Maniquis of Cornerstone Group.
Maniquis led the launching of the two-race series yesterday at the 30 Kitchen and Bar in the Gallery along with fellow organizers Quinito Moras and race director Niño Abarquez.
The race which features a 1.8-kilometer swim, 65k bike and 14k run will start and finish at the Tadeos Durano Port in Sogod town.
Unlike previous 80/80 races, organizers decided to open an Elite division with cash prizes for the top three male and female finishers to be shouldered by the host town. There will also be age group competitions.
According to Maniquis, they will not pass through Bogo city this year since the city’s main road is being used for the construction of a new mall.
The top three male and female finishers in the Elite category will receive P10,000, P7,000 and P3,000.
Registration for both the Sogod and the San Remigio leg slated on Nov. 14 will start on Monday. Registration fee for early birds enlisting before April 15 is pegged at P3,500. Those who will register later will have to pay P3,800. The 40/40 fee is set at P2,500.
Meanwhile, the registration fee for the relay division is pegged at P6,500 for early birds and P7,000 for late registrants. To register, visit 80/80 Triathlon’s official Facebook page or visit the 30 Kitchen and Bar.
