Jealousy led to Tisa mauling: Man linked to attack charged with alarm and scandal

CEBU CITY, Philippines — Police have filed charges of alarm and scandal against the man arrested for allegedly being involved in a riot among young individuals that started because of jealousy in Barangay Tisa, Cebu City.
The mauling took place at the disco at around 2:00 a.m. on Monday, September 25, 2023 during the celebration of the Siomai Festival.

Attack caught on video, jealousy started it
Amidst the festivity, a man was attacked by a group of young individuals which was captured on a video that went viral on social media.
In response to this, personnel of the Labangon Police Station began their investigation on the alleged incident that caused panic to bystanders who only wanted to celebrate and enjoy the fiesta.
The day after the incident, police arrested in his home one out of the five individuals allegedly involved in the attack caught on video.

One of attackers in fight started by jealousy nabbed
One of the men who can be seen in the video attacking the victim is 21-year-old Angelo Lauza.
Lauza is detained at the Labangon Police Station and was charged with alarm and scandal.
Police Major Angelito Valleser, chief of Labangon Police Station, said that Lauza and his four accomplices will be charged with alarm and scandal so as to show an example of behavior that should not be followed.
Other than Lauza, the four others in the video identified as: Charles Parba, Arnel Lauza, a man by alias “Pacquiao,” and Penserim Modequillo will also be facing charges of alarm and scandal.

Jealousy led to mauling case: Why 4 cohorts not arrested yet
When asked why they had not arrested yet the other four cohorts of Angelo, Valleser said that after they identified the people involved and attempted to arrest the others and could not find them anymore, the hot pursuit operation against them would have been terminated already.
Now, he said their move would be for the filing of cases against them whether they were arrested already or whether they are still at large.
How riot, mauling started, new developments
As for the riot on early Monday morning or a few hours after the day of the fiesta in Barangay Tisa, Cebu City, Valleser said the video captured only a small portion of the fight that broke out on the day of the incident because of jealousy over a woman.
The police chief told CDN Digital in a phone interview that it all started when 18-year-old Charles Parba saw his live-in partner holding hands with her alleged other lover identified as Jercel Gabiana at the disco.
Parba reportedly has a 2-year-old child with the woman.
Angered by seeing his live-in partner holding hands with another man, Parba allegedly tried to forcibly bring the girl home, but he was stopped by Gabiana which prompted him to punch the latter.
Parba allegedly then went home but he noticed that he dropped his phone during the commotion.
Hit by bottle
When he returned to retrieve it, he was allegedly hit with a bottle by Gabiana which was witnessed by relatives of Parba.
Friends of Parba allegedly wanted to get back at Gabiana’s group but they ran away except for one.
It was this moment captured in the video when Parba’s group attacked Gabiana’s friend, Adrian Jay Caballero, who was left behind.

Physical injuries complaint filed at barangay hall
Valleser said that Caballero had filed a complaint of physical injury at the barangay hall in Tisa against the five men who attacked him.
Meanwhile, Parba has also filed a complaint of physical injury at the barangay hall against Gabiana for his injuries after getting hit with a bottle.
With regards to Parba filing a complaint at the barangay, the police chief said he did not know when he filed the complaint at the barangay.

Go to authorities, don’t take law in your own hands
Following this incident, Vallaser advised the public to not let anger dominate their behavior and to ask help from police when something would happen.
“Ug naa silay problema, moduol sila sa awtoridad. Dili kay mocreate na pud sila og laing problema. Unya matud pa niya, nilaban daw sila pero di na pwede nga ibutang ang balaod sa imohang kamot,” the police chief said.
(If there is a problem, go to the authorities. Not that you will create another problem. And according to him, they just defended their relative but as much as possible let’s not take the law into our own hands.)
Fighting back not a solution
Valleser said that fighting back was not the right solution as it could also cause an alarm to other residents especially during celebrations.
“Og naay masakitan imo kaliwat, moreport ka sa authority para madakop to. Dili kay kulatahon pud ninyo anha nya naa moy activity niya mga tawo baya, mahadlok baya,” Valleser said.
(If you see your relative being hurt by someone, report this to the authority so that that person would be arrested. Not that you also attack there where there is an activity, this will scare people there.)
