CEBU CITY, Philippines — Jealousy over a woman’s former boyfriend started the mauling of a man in Barangay Tisa in Cebu City early on Monday morning, September 25, 2023.

Police Major Angelito Valleser, Labangon Police Station chief, said in a phone interview with CDN Digital that the new boyfriend of the woman allegedly got jealous on seeing the woman’s former boyfriend in the area.

One of 5 suspects arrested

Valleser said that before the mauling at past 2 a.m. on Monday morning, the victim, who was consumed by jealousy, allegedly punched one of the five men, who attacked the victim later.

This information was given by one of the five assailants, who was arrested this morning by the policemen of the Labangon Police Station.

Valleser identified the arrested suspect as Angelo Lauza, 21, of Barangay Tisa.

Angelo’s four other alleged cohorts remain at large.

Valleser identified them as Charles Lauza, 18; Arnel Lauza, a certain Paciao, and Penserin Modiquillo.

All of them are residents of Barangay Tisa, Cebu City.

Jealousy and reason for mauling victim

The arrested suspect, Angelo, told police that they were just getting back at the still unidentified victim, after Angelo’s cousin, Charles Lauza sought their help after he was allegedly punched by the victim in the mauling.

“Resbak ra gyod ni siya sa biktima nga nanukmag kuno ni Charles,” Valleser said.

(This was just the five men getting back at the victim, who allegedly punched Charles earlier.)

“Nagselos kuno ni ang biktima ni Charles (nga kanhi boyfriend sa girlfriend sa biktima. Mao nga nanukmag ni siya ni Charles,” he said.

(Jealousy or the victim got jealous of Charles (who was allegedly a former boyfried of the victim’s girlfriend. That is why he allegedly punched Charles.)

“Matud pa niya (Angelo) nga nagpalaban kuno ni si Charles nila, mao na ilang gitabangan,” the police chief said.

(According to Angelo, that Charles sought their help, that was why they ganged up on the victim.)

“Mao nang nakit-an sa video. Pero ang sinugdanan kuno ana kay nanukmag kuno ni ang biktima ni Charles,” Valleser said.

(That was what was seen in the video. But the start of that was that the victim allegedly punched Charles earlier.)

Valleser was referring to the video that was posted online of the attack of the Angelo Lanuza and four others against the still unidentified victim.

Barangay tanod: No complaint, no probe

CDN Digital also asked a barangay tanod in the Tisa Barangay Hall this morning about what happened. The tanod said that everything was already settled by both parties.

The tanod said that the victim had a busted lip and that this was already treated by the emergency responders who arrived in the area.

Since both parties settled their fight, he said, and that no complaint was filed so no investigation was done.

Police responding to another alarm

The Labangon police chief, on the other hand, explained why there were no policemen at the time of the mauling.

He said that there were police assigned in the area, but at that time, the policemen there were responding to an alarm in another part of the barangay.

He said that when they returned from that alarm, the mauling was already over and parties involved were no longer in the area.

Valleser said that they would file alarm and scandal charges against Angelo and his four other cohorts, who remain at large as of past 4 p.m. today.

He said that if the victim in the mauling would visit the police station and file physical injury charges against the suspects, he could also do that.

Alarms and scandal charges readied against suspects

But for now, the police chief said they (the police) would be the one filing the alarm and scandal charges against the five men.

Pero sa police mofile mi og alarm and scandal (nga kaso) kay nakacreate man sila og alarm sa mga tawo didto. Kay ang mga tawo didto, naa baya didto kay gusto rang maglingaw lingaw base sa activities sa fiesta,” he said.

(But we, the police, will file an alarm and scandal (case) becaue they alarmed the people there. This is becaus the people there, went there because they wanted to enjoy according to the activities in the fiesta there.)

The police chief also said that those who were hurt by the mauling or punching, whoever side of the fight would be could visit the police station and file physical injury charges against those involved.

He said that the victim, who had remained unidentified, could visit the police station and file a physical injury complaint against the five men, who attacked him.

He also referred to the other side, that they could also file a physical injury complaint against the victim, who allegedly punched one of his attackers first.

But the five men, one of whom (Angelo Lauza) is arrested by the police, would be facing alarm and scandal charged that would be filed by the police, said Valleser.

He said that the affidavits had already been readied for the filing of the complaint against the five men.

Why police will file charges

“Pero sa side sa police, para maghatag og kakuan (warning) sa mga tawo nga maggubot gubot kung dunay kalingawan, filelan dayon namo,” the police chief said.

(But on the side of the police, so that we can give a (warning) to the people who engage in trouble if there are fun activities, we will then file a case against them.)

“Para di ni masundan sa ubang mga tawo nga kung dunay kalingawan magaway noon,” Valleser said.

(This is so that this would not be followed by other people who would create trouble during activities in the barangay.)

He also said that the cases would also be filed against those suspects, who were still at large.
