SHAABAA SEASON 26: Batch 2013, ’03, & ’01 draw first blood in respective finals series

CEBU CITY, Philippines — The Nestwork Spaces-Batch 2013, Cebu Landmasters-Batch 2003, and ARQ-Batch 2001 nosed out their respective opponents in game one of the best-of-three finals series in the Sacred Heart Ateneo Alumni Basketball Athletic Association (SHAABAA) Season 26 on Sunday, October 15, 2023. 

Batch 2013 edged the defending champions in Division C, Heritage Supreme Land Developer-Batch 2012, 84-65, while Division B reigning champions, Batch 2003, routed Efficascent Boost-BRC-Batch 2010, 88-53. Batch 2001 also won over Bayfront Hotel Batch 1990/1997, 49-43 during their game held at the Magis Eagles Arena in Mandaue City.

POWER TRIO

Rendell Senining, Fletcher Galvez, and Arc Gabriel Araw-Araw’s power trio proved they’re a force to be reckoned with in the finals. 

Galvez, a PBA Draft hopeful, put on a double-double game of 18 points with 12 rebounds, two steals and one block.

Senining, fired 21 points with four boards, two assists, one steal, and a block, while Araw-Araw unloaded 19 markers with eight boards, four assists, and four steals. 

Their teammate Emman Malazarte added 16 points to grab game one. 

Batch 2013 led throughout their game in the SHAABAA with its bench delivering 21 points over Batch 2012’s seven and they also ruled the painted area scoring 38 over Batch 2012’s 28. Also, Batch 2013 converted 16 points from turnovers compared to Batch 2012’s eight. 

Adven Jess Diputado and Julius Salvador Cadavis scored 21 and 20 points for Batch 2012. 

42-POINT ROUT 

In Division B, Batch 2003 flexed its might by leading as many as 42 points, 88-46, in the endgame to seal their victory over Batch 2010.

Leading the offense for Batch 2003 was Daryle Tan who had a double-double game of 23 points, 22 rebounds, eight assists, two steals, and three blocks. 

Justin Ross Huang also had an excellent outing after tallying 26 points, nine rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Their teammates Wilmer Rodney Ong and Barnett Moncrief Rogado also had double-double games. 

Ong scored 17 points with 11 rebounds, while Rogado had 12 markers and 11 boards. 

Batch 2010’s Gabe Branzuela had 21 points, while Jasper Diaz added 20 in their losing efforts.

On the other hand, Batch 2001’s Sandeep Naidu registered his own double-double outing of 10 points with 11 rebounds and two steals, while teammate Mark Hing added 11 points in their hard-fought win over Batch 1990/1997. 

Batch 2001 banked on their fastbreak points, scoring 19 over Batch 1990/1997’s six points, which was a key to their crucial win.

Walter Ong was the lone double-digit scorer for Batch 1990/1997 with 10 points. 

Meanwhile, Core Pacific Money Exchange-Batch 2000 captured the third place in Division A after beating Speed Demon Vivant-Batch 1994/1995/1996, 82-69, also last Sunday. 

Game two of the three divisions’ best-of-three finals series is on October 22, 2023.
