LAPU-LAPU CITY, Cebu- An official of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) in Lapu-Lapu City is reminding candidates in the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) to follow election guidelines to avoid the imposition of sanctions that may include their disqualification.

Lawyer Ann Janette Lamban, Lapu-Lapu City’s election officer, said that common election violations include vote buying and vote selling, the unauthorized posting of tarpaulins and other campaign materials and pre-mature campaigning.

Campaign posters, Lamban said, should not exceed the authorized size of two feet by three feet.

Lamban said that as of Thursday, Oct. 19, which was also the official start of the campaign period, the Comelec office in Lapu-Lapu City already served 49 show cause orders to BSKE candidates accused of premature campaigning.

“[They may be faced with] possible disqualification because there is a violation, complaint against them. So, this will be decided by the Commission, and if the decision is against them, they will be disqualified,” Lamban said.

Meanwhile, Lamban said that the election paraphernalia that they will use in the BSKE on Oct. 30 has already arrived and are currently stored at the City Treasurer’s Office.

These include 44 bundles of ballots for the Barangay and 14 bundles of ballots for the SK election, seven boxes of election returns for the Barangay and four for the SK election; and three boxes of indelible inks.

Lamban said that the ballot boxes that they will use in the election were already painted and labeled.
