Driver, 2 passengers in Carmen, Bohol van accident remain in hospital

CEBU CITY, Philippines – Authorities in Carmen town in Bohol urge drivers to always have a presence in mind on the road, especially when they have passengers on board.

This was the reminder local law enforcers issued after a tourist van crashed onto a bridge in Brgy. Buenos Aires on Monday, October 23, that killed three tourists and injured three others, including the driver.

As of Tuesday, October 24, the driver, identified as Junre Cagampang, remained in hospital due to injuries, Carmen Police Station said.

Aside from Cagampang, two of the five passengers in the van who also got injured, Lucino Cagampang Jr. and Jasper Argones, are still confined.

Meanwhile, police believed that Cagampang fell asleep on the wheel that ultimately led to the van crashing onto Camanayon Bridge, and claimed the lives of Abelardo Cagampang, Marlon Ondos, and Janice Bonbon.

The ill-fated van departed from Panglao Island around 5 a.m. on Monday.

According to investigators, the driver and all passengers were related. They came from Davao, and were in Bohol for a vacation.

On the other hand, police have already coordinated the relatives of the deceased passengers. They are expected to arrive in Bohol on Tuesday.

As to the possibility of filing of cases against Cagampang, police said they will wait for the decision of the family.
