More than 500 bikers joined the “Penitential Ride” that covered 14 churches in Cebu City at past 4 p.m., last Maundy Thursday.
The participants wore helmets and had blinkers and other safety gear in compliance with safety requirements set by Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama, who gave permission for the activity last Monday.

The 30-km bike ride kicked off at the Plaza Sugbo grounds near Cebu City Hall.

The riders were accompanied by 25 bike-riding police who acted as marshals with assistance from the Sugbo Bikers, one of the proponents of the activity.

Cebu City Councilor Gerardo Carillo, founder of the Sugbo Bikers, said the Cebu City Traffic Operations Management (Citom) and the Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council made sure that the solemn, six-hour bike ride didn’t meet any accidents. Carillo said they prayed at every church and returned to Cebu City Hall’s grounds at past 10 a.m.

He described the activity as “a success” and said he plans to organize another penitential ride next year.
