CEBU CITY, Philippines–These are the latest updates on the Sinulog Festival 2024 Grand Parade being held at the South Road Properties (SRP)  in Cebu City on January 21, 2024.

Sinulog 2024: 17 contingents will compete in Grand Ritual Showdown

Witness the performances of 17 competing contingents and four guest contingents as the Sinulog 2024 Grand Parade unfolds this Sunday, January 21, at the South Road Properties (SRP) in Cebu City.

Hot Sinulog day

Spectators of Sinulog sa Sugbo Philippines 2024 must brace for hot weather on Sunday, especially at the South Road Properties (SRP), which hosts the grand parade for the second straight year.

According to Pagasa-Mactan’s weather specialist, Jhomer Eclarino, the heat index on Sunday ranges from 35 to 38-degrees celsius which falls under the ‘extreme caution’ category.

For the second consecutive year, there has been a decline in the participation of dancing groups in the grand parade and ritual showdown. The number of contingents has dropped from over 40 in previous years to below 20.

A Sinulog head dress vendor’s struggle

Jovelyn Patulan, 38, one of the Sinulog head dress vendors near the SRP access road, cries as she is saddened to be only able to sell P100 of her merchandize as of 10 a.m. Sunday.

Patulan said that she spent P20,000 to purchase the headdresses and other hair accessories and P500 for the permit. 

Patulan added that only a few spectators were traversing the SRP access road. 

Vendors are prohibited from crossing the other side of the road to invite spectators to buy their headdresses.

She said that some of the head dress vendors are seling across Nu Star but the permit to be able to sell there is P5,000. Last year, Patulan sold head dresses near the Basilica Minore Del Sto. Niño De Cebu.

MORE TOILETS, TENTS PLEASE

Sinulog spectators who were staying under the shade in different areas in the South Road Properties said that they wanted the organizers of the festival to provide more toilets and accessible spaces for shades that are near the location of the grand parade. 

“Sobrang init…kulang ng supply ng water,” Cora Bella Achurra Asuero who came from General Santos City, said.

Cora Bella Achurra Asuero, from General Santos City, expressed some of her concerns while watching the Sinulog Grand Ritual Showdown at the South Road Properties (SRP).
In her first Sinulog experience at the SRP, Asuero said that she heard a lot from her peers that the festival was better executed when it was still held at the Abellana Sports Complex (Cebu City Sports Center).

The South Road Properties (SRP), as a venue for the Sinulog Festival, was too hot.

This was the sentiment of some spectators who watched the festivities at the SRP on Sunday, January 21.

Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama, in an interview with the media on Sunday afternoon at the grandstand at the South Road Properties (SRP), said that the Sinulog Grand Parade and Ritual Showdown will still be held at the SRP in 2025.

Pedro Dagodog, from Zamboanga Del Norte, said that he enjoyed watching the performances of the contingents in the Sinulog Grand Parade but his favorite part was seeing Señor Sto. Niño. 

Crowd thickens at sundown

The crowd at the venue of the Sinulog 2024 Ritual Showdown has started to thicken. Some people were already allowed to enter the venue even if they do not have tickets as of 5 p.m.

Around three million people attended the Fiesta Señor celebration in Cebu City, including those who were in the South Road Properties (SRP), where the Sinulog Grand Parade and Ritual Showdown are being held.
