Drug suspect’s wife skewered by iron bar in escape attempt
A woman who tried to escape a police anti-illegal drug operation died when she jumped from the second floor of her house and fell on a steel bar in barangay Calamba, Cebu City.
Maria Lita Diaz, 42, was impaled on the metal bar, a freak accident, according to the police.
Operatives of the City Intelligence Branch (CIB) earlier conducted a buy-bust operation against the woman’s husband Melchor.
They said Melchor sold a pack of shabu worth P200 to a poseur-buyer. in the couple’s house in sitio Mahayahay.
Supt. Romeo Santander, chief of CIB, said that at the time, the woman was on the second floor of the house repacking shabu.
When police moved in to arrest Melchor, the woman panicked and jumped out the window.
She landed on a steel bar that protruded from a concrete post of an unfinished house.
The iron bar pierced woman’s body.
Police rushed to rescue the woman. In the commotion that followed, her husband Melchor disappeared.
It took several minutes before the police were able to remove the skewered body by cutting the iron bar with a hacksaw.
Paramedics from the Emergency Rescue Unity Foundation brought the woman to the Chong Hua Hospital where she was declared dead.
Two medium-sized and 41 sachets of suspected shabu were recovered in the house.
