THE PRIDE of the northern Cebu town of San Remigio, Mercito “No Mercy” Gesta, fell short in his fight against American Carlos Molina yesterday, settling for a split draw decision at the Fantasy Springs Casino, in California, USA.
Gesta, who has been chasing a convincing comeback win following his loss to Mexican Miguel Vasquez for the IBF world lightweight title last 2012, will have to wait for another chance to prove himself worthy of another major fight after the disappointing draw.
Judge Tom Taylor scored the 10-round bout, 96-94, in favor of Gesta while judge Eddie Hernandez gave it to Molina, 98-92. Judge Max Deluca scored it even, 95-95.
Gesta is fighting under the Golden Boy Promotions of Oscar De La Hoya. He signed an indefinite contract earlier this year with the hopes of landing another shot at a world title.
Gesta suffered his second draw to go with 28 wins, 16 by knockouts, and a single loss. Molina also absorbed his second draw with 17 wins, seven knockouts and two losses.
Gesta, who has been based in San Diego, California since 2007, won two straight bouts after losing to Vasquez last 2012.
