Batch ‘99 sweeps elimination round in Cecaba

DEFENDING champion Batch 1999/BMC Hospital Systems-Hainanese Delights completed another elimination round sweep, officially clinching one of the two outright semifinal berths with an 87-76 drubbing of Batch 1995-La Nueva

Pharmacy last Saturday in the Cebu Eastern College Alumni Basketball Association (Cecaba) 14th Dr. Chen Lieh Fu Memorial Cup at the CEC Gym.

With the dynamic duo of Mark Bukiron and Earn Saguindel scoring 24 points each, Batch 1999 preserved its immaculate slate with its 13th straight win.

Albert Uy added 15 points and Ruben Yap Jr. contributed 11 for Batch 1999 which padded its amazing winning streak to 32 dating back to the previous season.

Donald Anthony Ting piled up 33 points, James Joseph Yu scored 17 and Dean Dy Teves finished with 11 points and 13 rebounds but the quarterfinal-bound Batch 1995 ended its elimination round campaign on a losing note and dropped to 8-5 (win-loss).

In the other game, Batch 1986/1990s/2000s brightened its chances of earning a twice-to-beat edge in the quarterfinals after it nosed out Batch 1980s/1990s/2011-Koi Herbal, 72-71.

Aljhune Areja fired 30 points, Randy Sypongco had 19 and Ranier Chu donated 12 as Batch 1986/1990s/2000s nailed its seventh win in 12 games.

It was a crucial loss for Batch 1980s/1990s/2011, which came into the game looking to solidify its hold of earning an outright passage to the semis.

Instead, Batch 1980s/1990s/2011dropped to third place with its fourth defeat in 12 games.

Paul Cabellon paced Batch 1980s/1990s/2011 with 24 points, while Raymond Sypongco added 20.
