Some 1,300 teachers will be hired by the Department of Education (DepED) in Cebu province in preparation for the opening of classes on June 1.
Cebu provincial schools division superintendent Dr. Arden Monisit said last Thursday they are targeting a 1:45 ratio this school year. This means one teacher for 45 students.
Monisit is expecting a 5-percent increase in the number of enrollees for school year 2015-2016.
This would bring the total public school population in Cebu to almost half-a-million from 450,000 in the previous school year.
This includes all students in the preschool, elementary and secondary levels.
Monisit said the new teachers will be deployed to the 44 municipalities, which are under the jurisdiction of the Cebu provincial schools division.
The component cities of Cebu are under the jurisdiction of separate school divisions.
For this coming school year, Monisit said they have 1,300 available slots under the 2015 General Appropriations Act.
“We have already done the ranking process. We followed the strict guidelines in accepting the applicants”, Monisit said, referring to the hiring of teachers.
Monisit said the teachers’ rankings are now being posted.
Those who ranked from number 1 to 500 are sure to be hired, Monisit said. They have been told to process their clearances.
These new teachers will get a salary of around P20,000 (P18,000 basic salary plus P2,000 allowance), a rate that’s competitive with the average gross monthly pay in the business process outsourcing (BPO) sector.
Monisit said local government units that still need teachers even after DepEd deploys their personnel may hire more. But the LGUs will have to pay the non-DepEd teachers.
With regards to the classrooms, Monisit said a total of 241 classrooms have been turned over by different donors including nongovernment organizations in areas affected by typhoon Yolanda.
Monisit said he could not say yet if there will be a classroom shortage in the province.
He said that will be determined after the enrollment, which coincided with the Brigada Eskwela this week.
Monisit said the number of required classrooms will depend on the number of enrollees.
