THE THIRD qualifying kiddies chess tournament of the Cebu School of Chess will be held this weekend at the Cebu School of Chess headquarters along P. del Rosario Street in Cebu City.

International Master (IM) Kim Steven Yap, the organizer of the tournament, is expecting to draw around 40 kiddies wood pushers in the monthly tournament aimed at developing chess at a grassroots level in Cebu.

The champion wood pusher of this seven-round Swiss system format tournament will take home P1,000 and a trophy. He will also earn a slot to the grand finals set on December.

Second placer will win P500 while P300 goes to the third placer. The top female wood pusher will receive P150 and also earn a slot to the grand finals.

So far, those who have qualified are Marphine Mangubat and Jeremy Pepito for the month of January and Chris Aldritz Pondoyo and Angel Naureen Bagano for February.

US-based Ramon Manon-og and Australia-based Efrain Tiongko, both chess enthusiasts, are sponsors of the tournament.
