CCSC to extend archery program until late February
Cebu City Sports Commission’s (CCSC) archery program is expected to run until late February, according to CCSC chairman Edward Hayco.
Hayco, who is partnering with the Cebu Archery Club (CAC) of Dondon Sombrio and Pacheco Valenzona in this program, said they were aiming to end the event in the first week of Febuary. But the earthquake last October and the supertyphoon in November changed the group’s schedule.
“Everything is still floating,” Hayco said. “We might be staging the finals at the end of February instead.”
The program includes the holding of school-based tournaments and qualifying tournaments for the finals to be held at the Cebu City Sports Center. Aside from hoping to promote the sport in the grassroots level, the CCSC is also aiming to break the record of the biggest archery tournament held by the USA through the grand finale of the program.
“Breaking the Guinness record for archery has become a daunting and challenging task. The natural calamities shook up the program.” Hayco said.
Hayco said the group still needs two to three officiating teams to handle the ongoing school-based tournaments. The team will be needed to speed up the qualifying competitions in the remaining 120 public schools in the North and South districts of Cebu City.
CCSC has now catered 8,500 participants from an estimate of 40 to 60 schools. They could have doubled the number of the participants if they had enough manpower.
Hayco said the calamities made things more difficult for the CCSC to reach its goal but they remain optimistic, especially with the way volunteers have committed themselves to the program.
