Brownouts today due to power shortage

June 01,2015 - 12:23 PM

Several areas within the franchise area of the Visayan Electric Co. will experience brownouts due to a power shortage.

The National Grid Corp. of the Philippines issued a “power shortage system” alarm to Veco and only gave 63.8 MW.

Joey Maleza of the Department of Energy said the shortage is due to the absence of the 200-MW Kepco SPC Power Plant which was damaged by fire last Saturday. The Visayas grid has a shortage of  226 MW today.

Veco advised the companies enrolled in their Interruptible Load Program (ILP) to deload from the grid.

ILP is one of Veco’s measures to address the power shortage. Companies with higher consumption are to de-load from Veco’s system and have the option to run their own generators or simply stop their operations.

This will reduce the shortage and minimize, if not prevent rotating brown outs.  Several areas in Metro Cebu will experience rotational brownouts from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., today./ Reporter Victor Anthony Silva
