Disaster resiliency cited in amended zoning law

Amendments to Mandaue City’s 36-year-old comprehensive land use development plan and zoning ordinance were incorporated by the Mandaue City Council in last Friday’s public hearing.

Mandaue city planning officer Florentino Nimor told reporters that the amendments were aimed at updating the ordinance to accommodate present land management needs.

He said the ordinance will also include  disaster risk reduction management and climate change adaptation practices in building structures and establishing zones within Mandaue City.

Among the amendments are the restriction on expansion of businesses that no longer conform to the present zone classification where it is based  and building of disaster-resilient structures complete with basic social facilities.

The public hearing was attended by the city’s business leaders, nongovernment organizations, local and provincial officials.

The amendments are supposed to be reviewed and updated every 10 years but the city failed to do so  for the past three decades.

Nimor said they will incorporate the amendments to the ordinance before submitting them to the Regional Land Use Committee (RLUC) and to the Office of the Vice President of the Philippines for review and approval.
