Gay writing in Cebu literary festival

June 21,2015 - 09:06 AM

A DISCUSSION on literature with  themes touching on the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community in the Philippines was one of the featured activities  in this year’s Cebu Literary Festival.

A panel  with the theme  “Coming Out” hosted by Ian Casocot, Kristian Cordero and John Iremil Teodoro,  delved into LGBT issues  yesterday afternoon at the Ayala Center.

“Lesbian writers are not yet coming out and we don’t know what the exact reasons are,” Cordero said.

The three writers admitted that gay literature does not yet have a wide audience.Casocot said audiences of gay literature are more interested in the subject  of sex rather than the story itself.

“Sex sells and gay literature is a guilty pleasure but as writers, we should not only focus on LGBT themes,” he said./UP Cebu Intern Mary Claire U. Catado
