Cebuano-backed 7As Bakeshop champs in Bayugan hoop tourney

The 7As Bakeshop, a commercial squad manned by Cebu’s finest commercial basketball players, emerged victorious in the Bayugan City Mayor’s Cup Invitational Basketball Tournament 2015 after they upended the University of the Visayas Green Lancers, 86-65, in the championship game on Monday evening at the Lope Asis gym.

7As, coached by one of the most successful commercial basketball coach in the country Van Halen Parmis, fought tooth and nail with the resilient Green Lancers in the first half then imposed their might in the game’s final 20 minutes to come away with the victory and the whopping cash prize of P250,000.

Former M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu Niños aces Ferdinand Lusdoc and Stephen Padilla led the victors with 25 and 18 points, respectively, while former pro, Eliud Poligrates, pitched in a dozen.

UV, which is in the thick of its preparations for the upcoming 15th Cesafi men’s basketball tournament, got 12 from Rey Suerte and nine from Josue Segumpan. Foreign player Steve Akomo added eight for the wards of head coach Gary Cortes.

The Lancers were the lone collegiate entry in the competition that was participated in by some of the country’s best commercial squads which included Araw ng Dabaw and Kadayawan Festival champions Goldstar Hardware, Montana Pawnshop and  SG Merchandise.

Afterwards, Parmis was all praises for UV where he also acts as assistant coach.

“At halftime, I instructed the boys not to underestimate UV. They must respect and play hard given the outstanding show the Lancers put on in the elimination round where they beat their opponents by an average of more than 10 points.”
