The Visayan Electric Company’s energy conservation campaign, Cebu Unplugged has won a bronze award in the Communications/PR Campaign: Investor Relations category of the 2015 Asia-Pacific Stevie Awards.
The Stevie Awards are conferred in recognition of achievements in the workplace.
This year’s awards recognized organizations from Asia-Pacific nations, namely Australia, China, East Timor, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Myanmar, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
“We at Veco feel proud that the concerted efforts of all the stakeholders in our franchise area is being recognized. Really, this is people power,” said Veco Reputation Enhancement Dept. head Theresa Sederiosa, who received the award at the InterContinental Hotel in Shanghai, China on June 5.
Cebu Unplugged, which was launched in June 2014, encourages consumers to conserve energy. The program helps mitigate the country’s energy supply deficit by asking business establishments to use their own generators during power shortages until new capacities become available in the grid.
Veco has gone on school tours around its franchise area to spread the word on energy conservation. About 1,650 elementary and high school students in both private and public schools have been educated on how to save energy as well as maintain electrical safety.
To track the campaign’s effectiveness, the company monitors the schools’ electricity consumption.
The school that registers the most significant decrease in electricity use will be given an award on September.
Veco is currently in partnership with the Cebu City government for the third phase. The city government will adopt the entire Cebu Unplugged concept. It will extend its educational campaign to conserving water and other basic day-to-day necessities.
In July 2014, the Cebu Provincial Board has also endorsed Cebu Unplugged to all local government units in the province for them to adopt energy conservation measures.
