One-way vehicle traffic in 4 Mandaue roads starts Wednesday

By: Melissa Q. Cabahug July 24,2015 - 12:49 AM

MOTORISTS and commuters heading to and from Mandaue City were advised to brace for next week’s one-way traffic scheme in four   national roads.

The scheme affects S. B. Cabahug Street in front of Cortes General Hospital and the parallel road of P. Burgos Street (see map) as well as A. Soriano Street and A. del Rosario Street.

The rerouting takes effect starting Wednesday next week, said Glenn Antigua, chief of the Traffic Enforcement Agency of Mandaue (TEAM).

It will  be in place in time for the Cobra Ironman 70. 3 triathlon  on Aug. 2 and the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit meetings that start on August 22.

“Mandaue City Mayor Jonas Cortes met with us a while ago. He really wanted the traffic scheme  implemented next week because if we delay, the roads may be crowded at the time of those events because of confusion among the drivers,” Antigua said.

Starting next Wednesday, motorists will follow the one-lane route at S.B Cabahug St. going to the north, Burgos St. (from Pacific Mall) to A. Soriano St., B.B Cabahug St. to A. del Rosario and A. del Rosario St. to S.B Cabahug St.

Vehicles on P. Burgos Street will go the oppositte direction.

Tricycles, which many Mandauehanons use in the city,  will take  S.B Cabahug St. in going to the Pacific Mall and will take Burgos Street in going to Mandaue City Hall.

Jorge Artiaga, a tricycle driver for 10 years, welcomed the change.

“O, maayo nuon na para di na kaayo traffic (It’s good at least it will lessen traffic congestion),” he said.

Antigua said the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) 6th Engineering District Office promised  to   asphalt on the roads  temporarily  to have it ready for the Aug. 2 triathlon and summit. The curing  process for  asphalt will only take four days, he was told.

Crebenon Jumula, project engineer of PLD Construction which is rehabilitating  Plaridel St., said  they can finish it before the APEC summit starts.

The DPWH has nine ongoing road and drainage projects in Mandaue City. These include A.S Fortuna St.(near the new Mc Donald’s), M.L Quezon St., Hernan Cortes St., J.P Rizal St.(Butuanon), H. Abellana St.(Canduman), Plaridel St.(going to Cansaga Bridge), Plaridel St.(Tita Gwapa), A.C Cortes St. and A.S Fortuna Extension.
