Cebu City residents are encouraged to report the presence of dangling utility wires and rotting poles to the Cebu City Command Center (C-3).

“We don’t want another accident to happen. Safety of the public should always prevail,” Councilor Dave Tumulak told reporters.

Tumulak, who heads the C-3, said the public can call their hotline number 262-1424.

He said the Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (DRRMC) is helping utility firms fix their dangling wires.

They have covered areas like Natalio Bacalso Avenue, barangays Labangon, Lahug and the area in front of the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG-7) office.

“This should not be only done by  companies but the Cebu City government and barangay officials should also do its share to address the concern,” Tumulak said.

Last July 7,  13-year-old Ralph Bureros died  after concrete PLDT post collapsed on a barbecue stand, breaking it into pieces and impaling him.

Last Saturday, another PLDT post fell in barangay Lahug.

One of two women  hit by the fallen post died two days after the accident.

PLDT and other utility firms on  Wednesday signed a commitment to  Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama to fix or remove dangling wires and rotten poles which pose hazards to Cebu City residents.

Failure to do so by October 28 means their business permits will be revoked.

At the Capitol, the provincial disaster risk reduction and management office called on utility firms to fix their dangling wires.

Office chief Baltazar Tribulano Jr. said they will relay the reminder to these firms.

“Not only in Metro Cebu but throughout the province. As long as there are electricity and posts, they are included,” he added./With Palompon Institute of Technology Intern Jay-Ileen Engalla
