They had lechon, fried chicken, pancit, barbecue and fruit salad for lunch.
About 27 children from the Pari-an Drop-in Center were treated to a festive lunch yesterday as they celebrated the 24th anniversary of the Children of Cebu Foundation Inc. (CCFI) and the 66th birthday of its chairperson, Cebu City Councilor Margot Osmeña.
Margot, who came with her husband former mayor Tomas Osmeña and grandchild Anita, received red roses from the children.
Today, it’s Tomas’ turn to celebrate his 67th birthday.
He will spend time at the Weekend Farmers’ Market along Mambaling access road in the South Road Properties, which he had helped set up in a private lot.
Cebu Gov. Hilario Davide III will cut the ribbon at 8 a.m. at the site today.
At least 30 farmers from Cebu City mountain barangays and the municipality of Argao in south Cebu province sell their produce there on weekends.
Osmeña said the purpose of the weekend market was to help upland farmers in Cebu City and those in the province sell their products without having to go through a middleman.
“This way they will earn more and the prices of fruits and vegetables will be 15 to 10 percent cheaper,” he said.
Osmeña, who is seeking election in the 2016 mayoralty race, visited the site yesterday morning.
He said customers in vehicles drop by to buy freshly harvested fruits and vegetables whose prices are even more affordable.
Most of the produce is sold out by noontime.
From there, he visited the Parian Drop-in center for lunch with street children celebrating his wife’s birthday.
The Osmeña couple sported red polo shirts when they arrived for the 10 a.m. program.
A birthday cake was also handed to Margot. The kids then each gave her a long-stemmed red rose. / UP Intern Julienne Hazel Penserga
