DOH logo means safe food

dohThe Department of Health (DOH-7) is making sure no delegate will get sick due to food poisoning.

Stickers with  the DOH logo will be placed  in hotels, restaurants and food outlets that pass food safety standards, said Reynan Cimafranca, Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (RESU-7) chief.

A food establishment would have to pass standards in food handling, preparation, kitchen sanitation and pest control.

“If they pass the inspection, stickers of the DOH logo will be placed in the establishments,” he told  reporters.

Health personnel inspected the five meeting venues as well as the restaurants and hotels located nearby to ensure food safety during the Apec meetings from Aug. 22 to Sept. 6.

The DOH also inspected the fast food chains and restaurants in the malls.

“We can’t stop  delegates and their family members from eating outside the hotel, so we just want to make sure that they have passed DOH’s standards,” he added.

Food establishments have also been advised to serve only bottled water to the delegates.

The delegates, and the public in general, are also warned to be careful in buying street food.

“There should be a health certificate issued by the local health unit. This means that the owner has undergone trainings and seminar on proper food handling,” Cimafranca said.

He appealed to the local government units (LGUs) to regulate the operations of street vendors to ensure food safety.
