Magis Eagles rout Dragons to complete elimination round sweep in Cesafi juniors hoop

The defending champions Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-ADC) Magis Eagles capped their dominating elimination round campaign with a 70-54 mangling of the Cebu Eastern College (CEC) Dragons yesterday in the juniors division of the 2015 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum.

The Magis Eagles finished the initial round with an unblemished 8-0 (win-loss) card to earn an outright semifinal berth.

Erol Pasto spearheaded the Magis Eagles with 17 points, three steals and two rebounds.

Also clinching an automatic semis berth were the University of San Carlos (USC) Baby Warriors, who survived the University of the Visayas (UV) Baby Green Lancers, 83-79.

USC sealed their sixth win in eight games behind the solid effort of Alje Mendez, who erupted for 30 points.

Mendez made 13 of his total output in the final period, including a layup that tied the game at 79-all with 20 seconds left.

Mendez shoved the Baby Warriors ahead, 80-79, with a split free throw. He then made it an 81-79 lead for USC when he again split his free throws in the final 10 seconds.

Jholo Pakkana iced the win for USC with two more free throws,

Briedyn Smith also came up big for the Baby Warriors by tallying 20 points, 11 boards and two steals.

Jancork Cabahug paced the Baby Green Lancers with 30 points.

In the other game, the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Baby Jaguars defeated the University of Southern Philippines-Foundation (USP-F) Baby Panthers, 73-61, with John Kirk Gonzaga firing 30 points and Joshua Renz Ortiz chipping in 14 markers.

The Baby Jaguars and the University of Cebu (UC) Baby Webmasters both ended the eliminations with 5-3 slates.

The Baby Webmasters took the third seed after beating the Baby Jaguars in their elimination round encounter.

UC took the fourth spot. The Baby Green Lancers will be the fifth seed with a 4-4, while USP-F took the sixth spot also with a 4-4 record.

In the quarter round, which will start on Tuesday, UC and USJ-R will be twice to beat over USP-F and UV, respectively.
