Furniture designers, craft makers in Asean to conduct workshop in Cebu
FURNITURE designers and craft makers will converge here in November for a workshop under the Craft Connect Project supported by the German International Cooperation (GIZ).
Nelia V. F. Navarro, Creative Cebu Council (CCC) director and Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) provincial director, said the workshop is the second to be held in Southeast Asia. The first was held in Chiang Mai, Thailand from August 31 to September 4.
“There were four Cebuano designers who joined the workshop in Chiang Mai and this November, we have invited counterparts from other Southeast Asian creative cities including Bandung, Penang and Chiang Mai,” Navarro said.
Representing Cebu were Karla Maria Ana Batiquin, manager of the Holistic Coalition of the Willing (HoliCOW) and Design Ventures Cebu; Anya T. Lim, co-founder and managing director of ANTHILL Fabric Gallery; Koh Martinez Onozawa, president, chief executive officer and co-founder of Loudbasstard, Inc.; and Neil Felipp San Pedro, creative director of Neil Felipp.
The project aims to promote collaboration, design development and innovation among craft, furniture and decorative items makers and designers in Southeast Asia.
Navarro said the designers, furniture makers, and craft makers from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) countries will be working together and exchanging ideas and best practices to help promote innovation and technology.
She said the creative industry of Cebu should not be overlooked because it is projected to expand further.
Earlier this year, DTI regional director Asteria C. Caberte said a Cebu fabrication laboratory is going to be set up this year to help the creative sector.
Patterned after the Bohol FabLab, the facility will provide cutting-edge technology in 3D design using laser cutters, computer controlled milling machines, and print and cut machines, among others.
A Cebu Design Center is also being planned in partnership with the private sector, Caberte said.
