A group of college students in Cebu  found a way to teach children the value of saving water through a mobile game application called “Water Warrior.”

The hero is a a water droplet named Wawa, a combination of the first two letters of “Water” and “Warrior”.
The Android-run app teaches children aged five to nine about water conservation.

The players are challenged to reach different goals and rise in rank with each milestone achieved.

“Water is very expensive now. Sooner or later, it iwill be  be even more expensive,” said Industrial Engineering student Jobelle Gerasta, one of four members of Team ECho composed of students from Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U).

Team ECho was the first runner-up winner in the Games App Challenge category of “The Accenture Technology Campus Challenge.”

Joining Gerasta in the team are Industrial Engineering student Chum Keji Ocan, Information Technology student Mark Joseph Fernandez, and Computer Science student Junjie Sumalinog.

Surveys and focus group discussions were conducted among students, parents and teachers from CIT-U, Pitalo Elementary School in San Fernando town, and Southern Bethany Christian School of Minglanilla.

The designers also got good  feedback from barangay officials.

“We were able to get insights from the kids about what they want in a mobile game,” Gerasta said.

The young developers said they wanted to develop the game further by adding mini games based on insights from the kids.

JP Palpallatoc, digital lead of Accenture Philippines, said the game was well-received by his own daughter.

“It really is a game for children. My kid loves it,” said Palpallatoc, one of the competition judges.

He said the entries for the competition have “exceeded expectations” and were very impressive and exciting.

An app to locate the nearest junkshop and solid waste management or waste recycling facilities in Metro Cebu was also developed by CIT-U students.

Team Spectrum won first prize in the App for the Future competition of the Accenture Technology Campus Challenge.

Both teams will be working closely with CIT-U to develop and market their applications in the future.
