Cesafi volleyball finals begins
The championship round of the Cesafi volleyball tournament begins today (Friday) at the University of San Carlos (USC) gym.
Leading the list of finalists today are the defending men’s champions Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras, who start their best-of-three series against the USC Warriors.
The match up is expected to be a tight one as both teams have a 1-1 (win-loss) head-to-head record this season.
The Warriors handed SWU its first loss of the year with a 19-25, 20-25, 25-18, 25-22, 15-8 come-from-behind win. SWU bounced back in the semifinal round, crushing USC in straight sets, 25-18, 25-23, 25-22.
In the women’s division, facing off in the finals are the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Lady Jaguars and the SWU Lady Cobras.
The Lady Jaguars are aiming to prove that their recent victory against the defending champions Lady Cobras wasn’t a fluke. The win over SWU last Sunday allowed USJ-R to advance to the finals and closed the doors on USC’s championship run.
Lady Jaguars center-blocker Tovya Kaiko Galeon said that they have a good chance against the powerhouse SWU side but said they just have to fight for every ball on the floor.
“Coach said we just have to be brave and play with heart,” Galeon said.
In the high school competition, seeing action in the boys finals are USJ-R and defending champion USC. In the girls’ division, fourth-ranked Sacred Heart School-Ateneo Magis Eagles will look to continue their Cinderella run as they take on the SWU Cobras.
