Former WBO World super bantamweight title Marvin “Marvelous” Sonsona is again involved in yet another controversy, this time involving his promoters.
This, after promoter Sampson Lewkowicz and Sonsona’s former manager Samson Gello-ani decided to freeze their promotional contract ties with Sonsona after the latter failed to take the flight from his home town in General Santos City to Las Vegas, Nevada last Oct. 13 to train there.
In a report from Philboxing.com, Lewkowicz and Gello-ani were reportedly fed-up with Sonsona’s attitude and lack of discipline hence the disciplinary action.
Sonsona was supposed to leave for Las Vegas, Nevada with former world light flyweight champion Johnreil Casimero, Manny Pacquiao’s cousin Jonel Dapidran and trainer Jhun Agrabio. His failure to fly to Las vegas costs him a Dec. 18 non-title bout and a whopping $50,000 purse.
This latest caper by the wayward albeit talented Sonsona forced his promoters and adviser Al Haymon to give up hope that the boxer  will change and shape up given the number of opportunities he has missed.
His promoters warned that Sonsona “cannot fight under any other promotional outfit and they will sue anyone who will interfere and be involved in his boxing career anywhere in the world.” Sonsona’s promoters and Haymon felt they have “done so much for Sonsona and have tried to patiently guide him” to no avail.
Sonsona was originally scheduled to leave for Las Vegas last July 10 to train for a WBC world title fight against Gary Russell Jr., on September 22 but he requested that his trip be moved so he could celebrate his 25th birthday (July 25) here. He then promised to catch up but again failed to fulfill promise forcing Lewkowicz to scrap the world title fight where Sonsona was to earn $100,000.
Lewkowicz has been helping Sonsona get back on his feet since last year. In fact, Lewkowicz spent P500,000 for kidney surgery of Sonsona’s mom.
Sonsona, 25, has a professional record of 20 wins, 1 loss, 1 draw with 15 knockouts. He’s the current NABF and WBO International featherweight champion.
Sonsona’s lone loss was to Puerto Rico’s Wilfredo Vasquez Jr., in 2010. After that loss, Sonsona’s career got derailed as he has been involved in several controversies including drugs and women.
However, Lewkowicz and Gello-ani came to the beleaguered boxer’s rescue and gave his career a second chance by putting up a card headlined by the latter at the Hoops Dome in Lapu-Lapu City a year after his loss to Velasquez. /WITH REPORTS FROM PHILBOXING.COM
