HE was born on the day of the annual fiesta of Cebu City, so Niño Villamor Alpuerto made sure to pray to the Holy Child before taking the board exam for electronics engineers.
He finished fourth place with a score of 89.20 percent, bringing honor to his school, the University of San Carlos (USC), where he graduated cum laude last March.
Another Cebu graduate, Chester Kyles Cuyos Colita of the University of Cebu-Banilad, was the 5th placer with a score of 89.10 percent.
Results of the Electronics Engineer Licensure Examination were released Thursday evening.
“I’m overwhelmed with happiness. Honestly, I did not expect to make it to the top ten. The exam was very difficult,” said the 21-year-old Alpuerto.
The son of a single mother, Alpuerto said his mother Aimee had to work in a call center company to finance his studies and support his two other siblings in college.
He was born on Jan. 15, 1994 during the annual Sto. Niño fiesta in Cebu; hence is name Niño.
Before the examination day, Alpuerto said he made sure to go to the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño to ask the help of his namesake and also prayed at the Marian shrine in Simala, Sibonga town, southern Cebu.
Amid financial struggles to finish his course, especially during his fifth year, Alpuerto took an exam for a scholarship grant given by the Manila-based company Analog Devices Inc. and and qualified.
Now that he is a certified electronics engineer, Alpuerto said he looks forward to working at Analog.
“Work is already waiting for me, but for the moment, I want to rest first”, he said. Alpuerto is a a resident of P. Del Rosario Extension corner Urgelio St., Sambag Uno, Cebu City.
Aside from the good training given by the school, Alpuerto said he was very thankful to his family and friends for encouraging him to finish his studies.
Alpuerto said he had mixed emotions because while he celebrates his accomplishment, he was also sad that some of his friends did not pass the exam.
USC registered a 49.33 passing percentage in the licensure examination, with 27 out of its 54 graduates passed the exams.
Results were released Thursday night by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC). Out of 4,467 examinees, only 1,784 passed the exams given last October 24 and 25 in the cities of Manila, Baguio, Cebu, Davao and Lucena.
Engr. Joseph Karl Salva, assistant chairman of the USC Electrical and Electronics Communications Engineering Department, said they were not surprised by Alpuerto’s success.
“He is a bright student. We expected him to be one of the topnotchers,” he said.
As a reward, Salva said the management of the school usually allows a topnotcher to select a relative to enroll in USC for free.
