SILLIMAN University (SU) has established an Apps Incubation and Development Laboratory to enhance its academic facilities and help improve community service.
SU president Dr. Ben Malayang said the laboratory was created to develop skills in the generation of ideas and the application of technology for the concepts to be realized.
“This is also a way of getting different students and faculty from the different colleges and universities in the province and put their ideas together on what kind of apps to develop so that it might enhance the life in the community,” said Malayang.
SU students, however, are challenged to develop iOS apps that can facilitate academic learning and are community-oriented.
One app Malayang suggested is if a “Uber Pedicab” app can be developed, wherein drivers are alerted of passengers waiting for a ride instead of drivers roving around, adding to traffic and using up gasoline.
“These are the things our students can develop but this is not only for Silliman University but also for other universities and colleges in Negros Island,” said Malayang.
The Apps Lab is equipped with 31 iMac units, 31 iPad gadgets and state-of-the-art projection system located at the Uytengsu Computer Center.
The opening of the Lab was made possible by the partnership with Apple, Inc. and funding from the Uytengsu Foundation.
The Apps Lab is envisioned to nurture the creativity and ingenuity of students and youth in the province.
Earlier this month, the College of Computer Studies hosted a trainers’ training with Apple Inc. to capacitate some faculty and staff for the roll out of apps development programs starting next semester.
