Inch closer to UC in medal tally

With track and field and football events taking a day off in the 25th Cebu City Olympics yesterday, all eyes were on the smashers of back-to-back overall defending champions University of San Carlos-Basic Education (USC-BED).

And the junior Warriors did not disappoint as their elementary bets dominated their respective events yesterday at the Cebu City Sports Center badminton courts.

USC-BED’s elementary squad, which belonged to Unit 7, won three of four badminton finals including elementary girls doubles and both the boys and girls singles.

USC-BED is expecting more medals in badminton today as its secondary division smashers also advanced to the gold medal matches.

USC-BED’s Edison del Mar crushed fellow Unit 7 smasher Rodney Villafuerte, 21-5, 21-5, in the elementary boys singles final. The girls singles finals was also an all-Unit 7 duel between Chelsea Akiatan of USC-BED and Archelle Jane Ouano with the former taking the gold, 21-5, 21-14.

Completing Unit 7’s dominance was Tara Geromo and Alyssa Arellano who routed Unit 6’s Mykaela Rañola and Mia Apawan, 21-8, 21-10 in girls doubles.

Neil Ivan Ardiente and Alfie Ybañez of Unit 8 denied a USC-BED sweep after they defeated Schlander Librando and Mailhouse Larrazabal of Unit 7, 21-5, 21-8, to win the boys’ doubles crown.

USC-BED’s secondary badminton also sent some of its bets to the final round.

Mitzi Montalvo set a championship battle against Southwestern University’s (SWU) Kathleen Verallo in girls singles while teammate Lyrden Laborte meets Anthonne Abellana for the boys’ singles gold.

Laborte’s older sister, Lavylle, and her partner Alyssa Marie Dayday, will battle SWU’s Tricia Opon and Elloise Camillo for the girls’ doubles crown.

The USC-BED pair defeated University of Cebu’s (UC) Mary Camello and Jill Sanoy, 21-9, 21-12 while Opon and Camillo advanced after crushing Jenny Sumanting and Andrea Aguillon of the Abellana National School (ANS), 21-7, 21-5.

DANCESPORT

Meanwhile, UC’s Jeddah Marie Castañeda and Jake Emmanuel Coro topped the Latin American dance category in dancesport to grab the gold medal. UC’s unofficial medal count now stands at 30 gold medals, 13 silvers and 12 bronze medals.

However, USC-BED is now breathing down the Webmasters’ necks after hauling a total of seven gold medals yesterday – three from badminton, one from dancesport courtesy of Nikole Ken Rosales and Alexa Jane Genete in the modern standard dance category and another three from its netters Francis Lambaya (singles secondary) and the pair of Remoses Amba and Francis Navales (boys secondary doubles).  The Baby Warriors now tote a 27-14-9 tally.

Games in football and track and field were not played yesterday since the CCSC  oval and field were used for the Cebu City Hall’s Scholars Week Celebration.

Today, action in both medal-rich events continue with PAREF Springdale and Don Bosco Technology Center (DBTC) playing for the gold in secondary football while USC-BED faces Sacred Heart School-Hijas de Jesus (SHS-Hdj) in the elementary football finals.
