Council wants P15K for seniors’ cash aid

THE Cebu City Council has asked  the City Treasurer’s Office (CTO) and the City Budget Office (CBO) to study the possible increase of financial aid  to  registered senior citizens in the city.

Cebu City Councilor Sisinio Andales last Wednesday filed a resolution to increase the financial assistance from P12,000 to P15,000 a year per senior.

“The senior citizens are clamoring for it and P1,000 a month is too small for them,” Andales said.

Cebu City gives the highest stipend for its elderly among local governments in Cebu, an annual subsidy of P12,000 released in tranches.

About 60,000 registered seniors have received P10,000 so far. The P2,000 balance will be distributed next month.

Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama said Andales’ resolution was “politics”. “Why don’t they tackle first  Supplemental Budget 1. That’s another  responsibility. If they keep on  insisting (to hike aid for the elderly),  then it’s clear that they are being political,” he said.
