THE JUNIOR Chamber International (JCI) Cebu Mactan Channel in partnership with Anytime Fitness will hold the first ever Christmas Run and Fitness Festival next month at the Ayala Center Cebu.

The event aims to hit two birds with one stone.  JCI Cebu Mactan Channel is looking to raise funds for the benefit of the Special Education (Sped) department of Lahug Elementary School.

Anytime Fitness, meanwhile, hopes to promote its upcoming workout and fitness center in Escario Street this December. The Cebu branch will be the first outside Manila and is part of the fitness center’s massive expansion program in the Visayas and Mindanao.

The event was launched yesterday at Bo’s Coffee along Osmeña Boulevard. Present were Idyll Liza Peroramas, JCI Cebu Mactan Channel president, overall project chairperson Ethel Grace Escaño and Anytime Fitness Philippines owner Fil-Australian Luke Guanlao.

Peroramas said this is the first time JCI is organizing this kind of event.

“We came up with the idea so that we can help those who are less fortunate, rather than spending on parties this Holiday season,” she said.  “How can you serve longer if you’re not healthy? That’s why we decided to do this event instead of partying.”

Although the running event slated Dec. 6 is non-competitive, Peroramas is optimistic the event would be able draw around a thousand runners, especially since proceeds of the run will be used for a cause.

The running event will offer 3-kilometer, 6k and 12k distances and will be handled by veteran race director Joel Baring of the Sports and Fitness Enthusiasts (SAFE).

The fitness festival is slated Dec. 7 to 9. It will  feature a series of fitness challenges such as yoga, push ups and crossfit.                 Guanlao expects to attract 200 fitness buffs in the fitness festival.

He said he is excited to open his first branch here in Cebu this December. The new Cebu branch will be the first of four expected Anytime Fitness branches to open in Cebu in the coming years. The fitness center has 17 branches in Manila and Guanlao said he is eyeing a hundred branches in the country soon.

Registration for both events can be done at the Active Zone of the Ayala Center Cebu, Anytime Fitness tent at Escario, Skechers at the second level of Ayala Center Cebu and at the University of Cebu (UC) Main Campus and Maritime Education Training Center.

Registration fee for the running event ranges from P350 to P550. The fitness festival, on the other hand, will have a fee of P300.
