A non-government organization recently opened a demonstration area for urban farming and other livelihood skills.

The Mactan Urban Demonstration (MUD) farm, which is located along A. Tumulak Street, barangay Gun-ob, Lapu-Lapu City, stands on a 300-square-meter lot with a wide variety of vegetables and ornamental plants display.

Farm personnel will give demonstrations on livestock raising, hydrophonic farming, duck weed making, composting, recycling, fruit fermentation, herbal-, medicinal- and beauty products-making, native products-making and raising fresh water fish, among others.

Salvador Cariaga, head of MUD farm, said they aim to help people earn a living by using available resources around.

“They don’t have to go abroad to look for greener pastures because the opportunity is just right here. We help people who help themselves,” said Cariaga.

He said they have a 40-hectare land in Bogo City, northern Cebu planted with ornamental plants and vegetables, and where they raise animals such as goat, pig, chicken and fresh water fish.

Volunteer groups working in the farm sell the products to organic farmers market. “Wala’y bati nga yuta sa tambok nga huna-huna,” Cariaga said.

The MUD farm has an entrance fee of P30 for 30 minutes and additional charges for succeeding hours to cover the lot rental. It is open every day except Sunday.
