Mandaue  may suspend classes during IEC events

Families in Lapu-lapu have pledged to host 5,000 delegates of the Youth Day event on Jan. 28 during the International Eucharistic Congress (IEC ).

Mayor Paz Radaza said  on Wednesday that the delegates wil stay overnight  in various homes in the city.   The Youth Day is a side event of the IEC featuring praise and worship catechesis in the Hoops Dome and then a procession to an open field in Mandani Bay in Mandaue city for an overnight vigil.

The homes of host families are  situated  near five parishes — parishes are the Virgen dela Regla Parish in barangay Poblacion, the Sacred Heart Parish in barangay Marigondon, the Mother of Perpetual Help Parish in barangay Babag and  the Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish in barangay Pajac.

For the welcome dinner   hosted by the Lapu-Lapu City government, Radaza asked the Association of the Kababayen-an to prepare Filipino dishes such as “pancit” noodles  and “humba” pork stew.

“I encourage Oponganons to be friendly and kind to visitors they meet anywhere in the city,” said the mayor, ”so they have a good impression of Lapu-Lapu and think of coming back.”

Mandaue City Mayor Jonas Cortes is considering  suspending classes in his city  on selected days  of IEC events.

These are  the Youth Day gathering Jan. 28-29 , Thursday to Friday, in Mandani Bay and the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP)  assembly at Oakdridge Business Park Jan. 22-23, Friday to Saturday.

Concerned about traffic congestion, the mayor said he will meet with education officials  to assess if there is a need to suspend classes.
