His battle

When David came face to face with the Philistine giant named Goliath, he did not boast of his weapon ( he only had a slingshot), his strength (his body was small) or his company (he was alone).

All he said was this: “For the battle is the LORD’s and he shall deliver you into our hands” (1Samuel 17:47).

True enough and amazingly, David killed Goliath.  It was not his battle at all. It was and had always been in God’s hands. God had planned it all out. David was to be the victor.

We hear people tell us to take care of our own battles or to choose our battles. Sure, but our strength and abilities are inadequate. At one moment, we can be so strong and combative but at other times, we crumble and cry. It’s because ours is just human strength.

It is always the strength of God that aids us in every battle. As long as it is for our own good, He will take them all down.

In other words, it’s God’s problem. Let him solve it. Just be still. And know that He is God.

Powerful promise. Surefire solution so we don’t stress out.

Maybe that’s why, many years back, after my husband died, I was constantly feeling tired and discouraged. I thought everything depended on me.

True, I was suddenly a single parent with three small kids. True, I didn’t have a job anymore after I resigned to take care of my sick husband. True, I didn’t have savings and was living on donations and death aid. But I didn’t panic and stress myself to find ways to get out of this mess.

A friend once admonished me not to be the savior of the world. The day I resigned as the master planner of my life and allowed God to lead me through, I discovered that our lives didn’t fall apart.

My three children finished college. Two of them even studied in a prestigious school in Manila and currently hold great jobs. My daughter will be having her own family soon. We are still not super rich but we are all healthy, happy and fulfilled.

The consequence of surrendering to God all our battles and trusting in His  plans for us is that we can relax  in faith and in the knowledge   that God is able to run things without our help.

He doesn’t need us. But we NEED Him. Always.

So cast to the wind the belief  we are the  masters of our fate. God still holds the blueprint of our lives. He holds our future in His hands and if we only allow Him to steer our lives, things can only be victorious.

I’ve learned some painful lessons in life because I fought my battles alone. God, for me then, was just ensconced on His throne while He awaited my entry Through the gate of His Kingdom.

And that while I was alive, I have to fight for my own existence. Later, deal with God.

I found out that God wants to get involved in all my plans and decisions , even in times of confusion, anger and doubt. I experienced His faithfulness. Even if I continue to be stubborn or fail to remember Him, He will always be consistently faithful.

I reckon that He has not brought me this far just to let me down. He makes sure that I will remember that He wants to be there for and with me. He is my only hope to overcome even the biggest battles that come my way.

That is why I love the theme of the 51st International Eucharistic Congress that opens today here in Cebu— “Christ in you, our hope and glory.”

Jesus gave His life for us. He died but after He rose from the dead, He is with us today, alive and our only hope.

Shouldn’t we also give back to Him everything in our lives that He has redeemed?

The shepherd boy David relied on God’s strength to overcome the  giant Philistine. We are but puny creations of God with giant battles to face.  But the battle is not ours, it’s God’s. We don’t have to fight it on our own.

As we celebrate this historic International Eucharistic Congress right in here in Cebu,  let’s thank God for the eternal hope that we will always overcome any battle. With God.
