THE REIGNING champions Hope Christian School (HCS) ramped up their quest for a third straight title after they blasted Baguio City National High School during the opening day of the Shakey’s Girls Volleyball League Season 11 on Monday at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.
While it took some time, the tossers of HCS eventually imposed their might to win going away, 22-25, 25-16, 25-11 in Group A action.
In Group B, Cebu’s very own University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) announced its intention for the national crown with a 25-19, 25-18 win over the Ateneo de Davao.
USJ-R, led by the power-hitting Karen Derder, got off to a fast start as they led, 12-2, in the first set. Ateneo de Davao came roaring back to tie the game at 15-all and even briefly took the lead at 18-17.
Fortunately for USJ-R tossers, they got their bearings back and nabbed eight of the next nine points to chalk up the win.
Later, the New Zealand Kiwis overwhelmed La Salle-Lipa in straight sets, 25-17, 25-12. The win allowed the Kiwis to tie USJ-R for the early lead in Group B.
Meanwhile, the PR officer of Shakey’s admitted the mix-up between the schedule of USJ-R. It was earlier reported that the Jaguars were to face the Australian squad.
