MCWD: No water shortage

The Metropolitan Cebu Water District (MCWD) assures their consumers of enough water supply despite prolonged drought caused by the  El Niño phenomenon.

“We still have water. We are still meeting the target of  217,000 cubic meters of water per day,” said Engr. Edgar Ortega, Acting Manager of MCWD’s Production and Distribution Department.

He, however, said the drought would affect 80 percent of the surface water.

Of MCWD’s total water production, around 40,000 cubic meters are sourced from surface water, which means  around 34,000 cubic meters will be affected by the drought.

To prepare for the effect of the long drought, Ortega said the water district has been commissioning bulk water suppliers.

The MCWD also retains six percent of the total daily production which will be used in case of a water shortage.

Ortega said they are also conducting regular desilting in the Jaclupan and Buhisan Dams, preventive maintenance of their pumps and purchase of additional trucks.

MCWD supplies water to the cities of Cebu, Talisay, Mandaue and Lapu-Lapu and the towns of Compostela, Liloan, Consolacion and Cordova
